Over 35 dojos from across Canada have sent in photos and I am now collecting orders for the yearbook.

The yearbook is $20 a copy. All proceeds from this sale go towards supporting Team Canada 2012.

Each dojo, please organize amongst yourselves and send 1 cheque payable to Etobicoke Kendo Club at the address listed below.

Orders need to be received by December 9th.

Please keep in mind I will not be ordering extra copies. Once they are gone, they are gone.

The 2011 tri-annual general meeting of the Canadian Kendo Federation will be held Friday July 1, 7:00p - 8:30p at the BCIT Townsquare A & B in association with the Canadian National Kendo Championships (Website)

This meeting will present the financial report and audit to the members, as well as various other committee reports. As well, the board of directors for the next three year term will be elected. Various other agenda items as added between now and June 21 will be discussed and voted upon at the meeting.

The Eastern and Western Kendo grading committees are now open to receive applications for grading 1-Kyu to 3-Dan.

Please be advised that from this grading onwards, a written examination (1-Dan to 3-Dan only)will be required; you have to submit the examintation form by email BEFORE the grading deadline. The CKF's main site has the form that can be downloaded as well as information about where to find reading materials for study.

Eastern Kendo Grading will be held in Montreal - McGill University
Date: June 18th, 2011 at 9:00 AM; Deadline to apply for grading: June 11th 2011

CKF Taikai & Banquet

Dear Members,
The online Taikai and Banquet Registration is now up; please login into the system if you want to register.
The registration for both, Taikai and Banquet will be open until May 31st, 2011 at Midnight; there will be NO EXCEPTIONS; please don't wait until the last minute.
There will be a document with instructions that will be published soon on the CKF's main website however the process is pretty straight forward.
Upon login you will find 2 very visible buttons that will allow you to either register for the Taikai along with the banquet or, to make reservations for the banquet only.
The process it is similar to the one used for applying for grading but in this case, you don't need to be authorized by the Sensei or Dojo Administrator; you should not encounter any problems.

Kendo Ontario is implementing a number of programs designed to promote awareness of the organization and its purpose in our kendo community. We are sending you today(attached) the following: an introduction letter to all members, a new logo contest, and a questionaire. We mentioned this to many of you at the recent JCCC tournament. Could you please pass on this information to your dojo members. For dojos with juniors, we are making a program for them also.

Of particular importance is the questionaire. If possible, we would each dojo to discuss this amongst its members and provide us with feedback from your dojo by January 15th, 2011. With this information, and a new look for Kendo Ontario, we plan to implement a new direction for our organization in 2011. In order to make this successful, we need the support of all kendo players in Ontario. We look forward to hearing from you in January.

If you're wondering why you've received this email, it's because you were listed as one of the contacts for your dojo on the CKF website.

I'm Mark Kawabe of the Hayakawa Kendo Club in Welland. The club was formed in 2004 and this year, I opened a second location in St. Catharines.

It's a non-profit club - I teach because I love Kendo and want to share it with as many people as possible - but because we're a small non-profit club, we don't have a lot of money to promote it and attract more members. I think every Kendo dojo in Canada has gone through this situation. I have an opportunity to make a big change through a grant, which is where I need your help.

The Grant

Pepsi is running a grant program through their Pepsi Refresh Project. Ideas can be submitted for funding and if they are accepted into the grant process, they are then voted on by the general public. The grant idea(s) that receive the most votes over a 60-day period receive the funding.

I submitted a request for a $10,000 grant to allow the Hayakawa Kendo Club to offer low-cost kendo instruction to youth for a year. The money will be used to cover rent for the year, starting equipment costs and marketing. The plan is to get up to 100 youth (18 & under) involved in Kendo training, with classes twice a week at our St. Catharines location. The cost to the students will be $10 / month. This is really affordable and if we get even 1/2 those numbers, the program will be self-sustaining after a year and we'll be able to continue.

How You Can Help

As I mentioned, ideas were submitted to Pepsi for consideration. Our idea was accepted into the program and voting began on November 1st, 2010. People can vote once per day for each day of the voting cycle, which runs until December 31, 2010. The three ideas with the most votes in their category get the grant money.

I am hoping that you can help our cause in one of two ways:

1) Encourage your own club members to vote for our grant request once per day.

2) Vote for our grant request every day at the following website:

http://www.refresheverything.ca/kendoniagara

People vote by registering at the Pepsi Refresh Project website which requires you to provide your name and email address, then search for our idea (search for "kendo" in the search box) and vote for the idea.

If the Hayakawa Kendo Club receives this grant, we will be able to offer very inexpensive Kendo training. Niagara's been hit hard with the recession and cost is a major factor in getting parents to commit to Kendo. By lowering the price and offering quality instruction, we will be able to build a large membership base and increase the popularity of Kendo in the Niagara region. I am very excited about the possibilities and hope you are too.

Kendo is an important part of my life and I do my best to share my love of Kendo with my community. This grant can help our club make Kendo accessible to everyone in Niagara. I appreciate any help you can provide. If even half of the people doing Kendo in Canada were to vote for our idea every day of the campaign, I am sure we would have a very good chance of success.

Dear Dojo Administrator,

The next Kendo grading season is coming up; it will be held on June 6th after the U of T tournament and the information will be available soon.

This will be the first time that the Dojo administrators from Ontario and Quebec will be using the new routines to authorize members of your Dojo to grade.

All members will need to fill up the grading form (paper) and have it signed by your Sensei. That form may be required at a later time by the CKF. Once you have the forms signed, the Dojo Admin has to do the following:

Hi Paul! Here's an update on the second OKF Kids Keiko Event.

OKF Kids Event - Saturday, April 17, 2010

Jungko Kendo Club will be hosting the second Ontario Kendo Federation Kids Traveling Keiko event on Saturday, April 17th at 180 Steeles Ave., W., Suite 200 Thornhill, Ontario. Junior players from all Ontario Kendo dojos are invited to come together for a fun day of Kendo event. Practice will start at 15:00 and run until 17:00 with some fun events near the end of the practice.

The CKF Registration and Payment site is back on line. Thank you for your patience.

Upon login, you will be prompted to pay your membership fees. Please do so and login again to check that all your personal information and current rank is OK.

There are some few changes that will be visible to most of you and I will try to list them within the contents of this note, however the most important change is in regard to the grading application process so regular members, Dojo Administrators and Sensei are asked to pay special attention to that section and if you have any questions, please ask.

1. Membership fees.
The payment buttons will look a bit different but the mechanics of the payment process are the same. Please note that the fees are now cumulative which means that if you didn't pay your 2009 fee, it will be added to the 2010 fees and so on. Fees for 2010 are the same as usual, $15/yr. for Junior, $20/yr. for Senior and $75/yr for Dojo.

2. Dojo Administrators will now have an improved list of members of his/her own Dojo where the current rank and the date when that rank was granted is displayed. That list will display multiple rankings for a single member which means for example, if a member practices Kendo and Jodo both ranks will be available even if that member practices Jodo in a different dojo.

3. Grading
This is the most important part. When the new online system went up, we made the grading application form available to everyone; from now on, the grading application form will be locked and just the Dojo Administrator will have the authority to unlock it for each member and here is how it works:

3.1 - Each member who wants to apply for grading will need - as usual - authorization from the Sensei. That can be done by filling out an application form or just verbally. The mechanics of this will be at the discretion of each Dojo.

3.2 Once the member has the approval of Sensei, the Dojo Administrator will go online and pull up a special list of members of his/her own Dojo that will be available only within the Dojo Administrator's menu. That list will have check boxes for each of the disciplines the member practices and by checking the box and clicking on submit the Dojo Administrator will be "unlocking" the application form for those members.

3.3 After that, the member will go online, click on the application button and the process will be same as it was before.

It may sound confusing but, it is very easy to use particularly because the Dojo Administrator does not have to process one member at a time, all applicants can be done at once.

Please notice that the Dojo Administrator's role is JUST to unlock the application form. The Dojo Administrator WILL NOT PAY and or APPLY for the grading application of any of the members he/she is authorizing. Applying for the grading and paying appropriate grading fees will remain the sole re sponsibility of each individual member.

The CKF Registration and Payment site is back on line. Thank you for your patience.

Upon login, you will be prompted to pay your membership fees. Please do so and login again to check that all your personal information and current rank is OK.

There are some few changes that will be visible to most of you and I will try to list them within the contents of this note, however the most important change is in regard to the grading application process so regular members, Dojo Administrators and Sensei are asked to pay special attention to that section and if you have any questions, please ask.

1. Membership fees.

The payment buttons will look a bit different but the mechanics of the payment process are the same. Please note that the fees are now cumulative which means that if you didn't pay your 2009 fee, it will be added to the 2010 fees and so on. Fees for 2010 are the same as usual, $15/yr. for Junior, $20/yr. for Senior and $75/yr for Dojo.

2. Dojo Administrators will now have an improved list of members of his/her own Dojo where the current rank and the date when that rank was granted is displayed. That list will display multiple rankings for a single member which means for example, if a member practices Kendo and Jodo both ranks will be available even if that member practices Jodo in a different dojo.

3. Grading

This is the most important part. When the new online system went up, we made the grading application form available to everyone; from now on, the grading application form will be locked and just the Dojo Administrator will have the authority to unlock it for each member and here is how it works:

3.1 - Each member who wants to apply for grading will need - as usual - authorization from the Sensei. That can be done by filling out an application form or just verbally. The mechanics of this will be at the discretion of each Dojo.

3.2 Once the member has the approval of Sensei, the Dojo Administrator will go online and pull up a special list of members of his/her own Dojo that will be available only within the Dojo Administrator's menu. That list will have check boxes for each of the disciplines the member practices and by checking the box and clicking on submit the Dojo Administrator will be "unlocking" the application form for those members.

3.3 After that, the member will go online, click on the application button and the process will be same as it was before.

It may sound confusing but, it is very easy to use particularly because the Dojo Administrator does not have to process one member at a time, all applicants can be done at once.

Please notice that the Dojo Administrator's role is JUST to unlock the application form. The Dojo Administrator WILL NOT PAY and or APPLY for the grading application of any of the members he/she is authorizing. Applying for the grading and paying appropriate grading fees will remain the sole re sponsibility of each individual member.

It is with regret that I inform you the venue for the S.W.O.R.D. tournament is no longer available.

The issue, in brief: I learned today the person who loaned us the money for the deposit had an unexpected financial requirement and was therefore unable to provide the loan. The gymnasium rental is $800 which our club does not have sufficient funds to cover. The school board requires us to provide full payment today to secure the rental of the gymnasium. I can not meet that condition so the school board and I mutually agreed to terminate the rental agreement.

This means the tournament is effectively cancelled. I was thinking it could possibly be rescheduled for a date later in October but there are other Kendo events scheduled each weekend after Thanksgiving.

To date, there are eighteen participants who have pre-registered for the tournament through the website. No paper registrations or payments have been received. If you have sent registrations and/or payment through the mail, the payments will be sent back by return post when they arrive.

I am sorry to have to make this decision. Please accept my apologies to you and your dojo members for this situation and any inconvenience it may have caused.

If you have any suggestions or comments I welcome your thoughts.

DECEMBER GRADING

Our next gradings will occur in late November or early December for Kendo, Iaido and Jodo. As you are aware grading applications and payment of grading fees can only be done online through your CKF account. If you are thinking of grading sign into your account now to make sure everything is up to date and correct. Please do not do this at the last minute just in case there is a proble m and you need time to correct it. The Grading Information will be posted soon on the CKF website. Please visit the CKF website for regular updates regarding Grading Information.

CKF 2010 INDIVIDUAL AND DOJO MEMBERSHIPS

Please be advised that all member and dojo accounts will become inactive as of January 1, 2010. To reactivate your account your 2010 CKF fee needs to be paid. You may do this when you sign into your account for the first time in 2010. Once you sign in you will be redirected to the 2010 fees page.

Buffalo Joint Practice

Buffalo kendo Club and the University at Buffalo Kendo Club are happy to announce that The All Eastern United States Kendo Federation Joint Practice Event will be held at the University at Buffalo this year. The purpose of this event is to provide an opportunity for Kendoka to build camaraderie though the spirit of kendo. Team Canada Practice

We would like to extend an invitation to all kendoka in the region to a practice with Team Canada at the Mississauga Kendo Club on Friday, June 5th, 2009 from 8:30PM to 10:30PM in celebration of Kendo Month in Canada. We would also like to welcome you to bring your juniors and beginners to our beginner class starting at 7:30PM. After our godokeiko, we will quickly reconvene at the Tremendous Chinese Restaurant (yes, that is the name), for further bonding. We would like to thank all players who has participated in this year tournament. On behalf of the J.C.C.C. Kendo Club, we would like to congratulate all winners.

This Wednesday, May 20th, the Milton Kendo Club's 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. practice be will host to a reporter and photographer from two local newspapers: The Canadian Champion and Milton Curiosities. They will both be highlighting Kendo in upcoming articles, so we are hoping for a good player turnout to promote our sport in this community.

Just an update regarding the online Mid Year Grading Applications. Please go here to view the list of applicants for the various grading locations across Canada. You can check to make sure you are listed and that your name is correct for printing on your certificate. Other information is also available on this page. The lists will be updated on a regular basis with the final list posted after the deadline for the applications. If all this goes smoothly then the procedures we are doing now will become the norm for all future gradings.

So even if you are not grading at this time, please be aware of the new grading procedures that are being established.

CKF Mid-Year Grading

As you are aware the CKF is offering Mid Year Gradings in Kendo, Iaido and Jodo.

The application process for Iaido and Jodo Guelph gradings is now closed. To those of you that applied by the deadline, please visit the CKF website to view the list of applicants for these gradings (will be posted within a day). Please check to make sure your name is listed and that the name that appears on the applicants list is the name that you wish to appear on your certificate. Notify the CKF immediately of any problems or corrections.

For those of you that have applied or will apply for the Kendo gradings across Canada and the Iaido grading in Vancouver, a list of applicants will be posted on the CKF website the day after the deadline. As stated above, please check to make sure you are listed and that your name is correct.

CKF Grading Permission

Hello,

As you may be aware the CKF has launched the online application and payment module for grading. Previously when a student applied he/she was required to get the sensei to sign the paper application giving permission to grade. Since we are no longer accepting paper applications for the Mid Year Kendo and Iaido gradings at Etobicoke, McGill and Steveston it is very important that your dojo closely monitors who is applying for grading. The applicant must check mark a box that states the he/she has obtained permission from the sensei for grading on the registration page so please ensure that your club member has indeed done this.

The CKF will not assume any responsibility for any misunderstandings between the student and sensei.

Re: Western and Eastern Mid-Year Grading

Dear General Membership:

The CKF is happy to announce that the second phase of our online application is ready to become a reality this Wednesday, April 29th, 2009.

As you are aware, the online registration and payment for CKF membership was initiated at the beginning of this year. To date, it has been a great success. It has greatly increased our efficiency from an administrative point of view and we hope it has provided for you a quick and convenient way to monitor your own personal profile and account with the CKF.

Now, we are ready to go live with our online application and payment module for CKF gradings beginning with this year's mid-term kendo and Iaido gradings. Some highlights are:

1) instant registration and payment for gradings

2) a receipt will be emailed to the applicant upon payment

3) no filling out of forms and mailing of hard copies to the CKF

The application and payment for gradings is similar to what has been done when one registered and paid the annual CKF fee.

All applicants registering online will be asked to click a box on the grading application page that will indicate to the CKF that they have obtained permission to grade from their sensei or club president.

Please visit the CKF website this Wednesday for more detailed information and to see a list of Mid-Year Grading Locations.
